Vernel Griffin

March 23, 1926 — September 10, 2014

Vernel Griffin was born in Edgewood, Texas on March 23, 1926. He was the fifth of seven children to Jessie Griffin, Sr. and Etta Davis-Griffin. As an adult, he joined the Army and served our country overseas in the Philippines. After being discharged from the Army, he decided to relocate to Hobbs, New Mexico. It was there he met the love of his life, Thelma Stiff. They married and reared one daughter, Mildred. They celebrated over 64 years together. While living in Hobbs, he was employed by El Paso Natural Gas. In the early 1950s, the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and he worked for the State of Nevada. The family enjoyed many road trips and while visiting, Denver, Colorado, it was decided that Denver would be a good place to put down roots. Vernel landed a position in Colorado Springs at the Air Force Academy, not caring for the commute he later transferred to the Denver Federal Center as a machinist and heavy equipment operator. He received recognition for over ten years of service. Throughout his life, "Griff", as he was called by his friends, was charming and very stylish. He always had on his Stacy Adams, a sharp hat, and drove a smooth riding Lincoln. His favorite pastimes included reading his Bible, fishing and playing dominos. On Wednesday, September 10, 2014, Vernel Griffin was called from this life to join his parents and four brothers, whom preceded him in death; Jessie, Jr., Warren, Robert, and Roy Griffin. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Thelma Griffin; a daughter, Mildred Thomas, Phoenix, AZ, sister; Jettie M Griffin-Wells, brother; Oscar L. Griffin, Denver, CO, (2) grandsons; Darrell Armour, Denver, CO and Carlton (Sara) Hawkins, Phoenix, AZ, (2) Great grand Daughters; Tiffany Armour, Houston, TX and Perri Hawkins, Phoenix, AZ, and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends. My voice is now silent, but hope it will continue to echo to family and all who knew me!
