Precious Memories

Winiford Sweeney

Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved ones gone; those we love can never be more than a thought apart; for as long as there is memory, theyll live on in the heart.

Winiford "Wendy" Sweeney was born on February 22, 1952, in Ebenezer, Mississippi to Van Mayberry and Daisy Thomas Mayberry. She was educated in the Holmes County School System, where she graduated with honors.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early on in life.  Wendy took great pleasure in her commitment in serving The Lord as a Deacon and dedicated Gospel Choir Member.

Wendy bravely left home soon after graduating high school and lived and worked briefly in St. Louis, Missouri in the medical field, before enlisting in the United States Air Force in May of 1973.  She served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged.  While serving her country,  she would met the love of her life, Arthur "Art" Sweeney, who was also in the United States Air Force.  They joined in holy matrimony on November 17, 1973. To this union, two beautiful children, Victor DeMarco Sweeney, and Chelsea Kimiko Sweeney were born.  The family shared many happy and precious moments together.  Arthur preceded her in death. She was later blessed with four grandchildren, Victor, Jr., Paul, Kollin and Victoria, who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life.

Wendy dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren, and family.  Wendy loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals and imparting priceless wisdom and life lessons. She never missed an awards ceremony, sporting event, school or extra-curricular activity. She loved children and her community. You would often find her watching someone else's children and pouring into others. Wendy tirelessly served in the NAACP, American Legion, and as a mentor in the school system. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman.  To know Wendy was to love her.

Winiford Wendy” Sweeney departed this life on November 4, 2023, in her home in Aurora, Colorado.  Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her two children, Victor D. Sweeney, Sr. and Chelsea K. Sweeney; four grandchildren, Victor D. Sweeney, Jr., Paul Alexander Sweeney, Kollin Sweeney, and Victoria Kimiko Sweeney; one great grandchild, Legend Saint Sweeney; one sister, Thelma (Douglas) McCray; one brother, Van Mayberry Sr., and a host of nieces, nephews, bonus grandchildren, and great grandchildren; other relatives and  many friends.
