Wilton Brown was born on January 6, 1928, in Greenville, Texas, to Enda Cannon and George Brown. Wilton was raised alongside his siblings Charlie Mae, Esther, and Raymond. From an early age, Wilton developed a deep love for football, often sharing stories about how he watched local high school games by peering through a hole in the fence when he could not afford admission. His passion for athletics began early and remained with him throughout his life.

Wilton attended and graduated from the segregated G.W. Carver High School in Greenville, Texas. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving during the Korean Conflict. During his military service, he married the love of his life, Alma Jean Brown.

Following his honorable service, Wilton and Alma Jean moved to Denver, Colorado, where he began a long and distinguished career in government service. He first worked with the Veterans Administration before transferring to the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center, serving as a Tape Librarian in the computer operations department.

While working full-time, Wilton earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Denver. This accomplishment led to his promotion to the Human Resources department, where he served as a personnel manager. He concluded his government career with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW), retiring after 33 years of dedicated service.

After retirement, Wilton continued serving his community through his work in Security for Denver Public Schools.

In his spare time, Wilton was actively involved with the Shriners (Syrian Temple #49), serving as a member of the Motor Patrol. He was also a proud Mason of Rocky Mountain Lodge #1 F&AM, PHA and a devoted member of the American Legion. His faith was important to him, and he faithfully served as Superintendent of Sunday School at Jordan Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Among his lifelong friends were H.B. Raullerson, Howard Whitesell, Vick Wise, and Leroy Smith.

Wilton was also a devoted supporter of the Denver Prep League. For more than 70 years, he was a familiar and beloved presence at countless athletic events, demonstrating unwavering support for young athletes and the community he cherished.

Wilton departed this life on August 29, 2026, joining his beloved wife of 73 years, Alma Jean Brown; his daughters, Marcia Hydelburg and Linda Mae Taylor; and his sons, Wilton Brown Jr., Harold Brown, and Jerry Brown.

Those who continue to honor his legacy include his daughter, Eleanor Winters of Denver, Colorado; his sons, Edmond Ray Brown (Linda Jean), and Stanley Brown-Bey; and his cherished grandchildren, Michael Shawn Brown, Shontell Denise Brown and Eric Ray Brown.

He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and close friends who will forever treasure his memory and celebrate the remarkable life he lived.
