Walter "Sonny" Gant

October 18, 1954 — November 17, 2025

Walter “Sonny” Gant, born on October 18, 1954, in Meridian, Mississippi to Rosetta Winston and T.S. Gant. He was raised with his siblings, Alfred, Charles, Herman, Michael, John, Claiborne, Carrie Jean, Teresa, and Ester Mae.

Sonny graduated from Carroll High School and Meridian High School, before furthering his education at Tugaloo College and Howard University, where he earned a BA in Political Science and an MS in Urban Planning. Throughout his academic journey, he was involved in impactful activities such as bringing Earth, Wind & Fire to perform at his school.

Professionally, Sonny was the CEO and business owner of WG Enterprises LLC, with over 40 years of service in the transit industry. His commitment to excellence and relationships earned him great respect among his colleagues and peers, who remember him as a dedicated professional who fostered lasting connections within the industry.

Sonny was recognized early on for his leadership qualities and his kind-hearted nature. A notable childhood memory includes his participation in a significant Civil Rights demonstration at Walgreens, which speaks to his character and commitment to justice from an early age. He shared many fond moments with his family, including weekends spent visiting with his cousin Johnnie and enjoying sweet potato pie.

Sonny's faith played a central role in his life. He was an active member of King Baptist Church in Denver, CO, and Rose of Sharon Church in Monroe, LA, serving as an usher for several years.

Sonny's heart was enriched by love, through his marriage to Zola Cotton. They met at Ms. Mona’s House Party in Monroe, LA, and were joined in holy matrimony on July 24 in Arkansas. Together, they created a life filled with adventures as they traveled to destinations including Paris, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Their union was blessed with five wonderful children: Walter, Kisa, Chelewa, Makeda, and Alia.

As a father, Sonny was remembered for his generosity, and the joy he brought to family gatherings. Many cherished memories were created during family breakfasts, dinners, and joyous holidays. His children fondly recall traveling together, movie nights, thrillers and sports, especially cheering for the Denver Broncos.

Sonny's warmth extended to his grandchildren — Jayda, Draco, and Layla — who lovingly referred to him as Papa, Papadee, and Papa Doo. They treasure their times with him, sharing simple joys from sitting in papa’s lap, car rides, going to stores with him, listening to music, dancing, going to carnivals and enjoying lots of sweet treats including Oreos, Hershey’s, or Reese’s cups!

Those who had the privilege of knowing Sonny will remember him not just as a loving family member, but as a person of wit, warm-heartedness, intellect, and zest for life. His legacy of love and compassion will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Zola; children, Walter, Kisa, Chelewa, Makeda, Alia; grandchildren, Jayda, Draco, Layla; brothers, Herman, Alfred, Michael, and Charles (Brothers); countless cousins, nieces and nephews, family members, loved ones, colleagues and friends worldwide.

He will be greatly missed and forever remembered with love.
