LIFE’S JOURNEY
Brother Stephen Edward Carter
“Steve"
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from Lord which made heaven. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth”.
Psalm 121:1-2 kjv
. Stephen Edward Carter was born on January 23, 1937, in Demopolis, Alabama, to the late Eddie L. Carter and Gertrude Willis Carter. He departed this life on May 3, 2026, in Denver, Colorado. During his earthly journey, God blessed Steve with a long life, resilience, and the ability to wear many “hats.”
Steve as he was fondly called by family and friends, received his education in the Demopolis public schools and graduated from U.S. Jones High School in 1954. He was known for his artistic ability, outgoing personality, and love of sports.
At an early age, Steve accepted Christ and joined Saint Paul Baptist Church in Demopolis, where Reverend C. C. Ellis was pastor. After relocating to Denver, he continued his spiritual growth at Central Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend W. O. Mays. During more than 60 years at Central, Brother Steve faithfully wore many “hats,” but one of the most meaningful to him was serving as a dedicated Trustee and member of the Senior Warriors until his passing. He also served as President of the Male Chorus, member of the Mass Choir, chairman of the Sweetheart Musical, and supporter of numerous ministries. He was proud of the sign that he secured for the church. Whether helping with snow removal, lawn care, or repairs, many affectionately knew him as “Central’s Best Handyman.”
Brother Steve also proudly wore the “hard worker hat.” He worked in manufacturing, retail, and other industries before joining the Denver Water Board. At the Water Board he moved through the ranks, retiring as a supervisor, a role he carried with pride and responsibility.
After retirement, he put on the “lawn care hat,” building lasting relationships with clients who relied on his dependable service. He also continued wearing the “handyman hat,” gladly helping family, friends, neighbors, and church members whenever needed.
Of all the hats Steve wore, his favorite was the “dad hat.” He deeply loved his daughters—Faye, Beverly, Stephanie, and Dawna—and proudly shared stories about them with family and friends.
Brother Steve never met a stranger. His kindness, generosity, work ethic, and spirit of service touched countless lives.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his brother, Norman A. Carter. He leaves to cherish his memory: his daughters Faye Henderson of Thomasville, NC; Beverly Webb of Denver, CO; Stephanie Carter and Dawna Landavazo (Javier) both of San Diego, CA; his siblings; Bernice Richardson (Robert), Richard Carter (Ernestine), both of Huntsville, AL; Robert Carter (Angernette) of Montgomery, AL and Marthell Burney of Saginaw, MI; a devoted “cousin/sister,” Barbara Hobbs of Tuscaloosa, AL; and a sister-in law Bettie Carter of Cordova, TN; along with grandchildren, Candice Henderson, Damien Henderson (Shanta), Diedre Cauley Banks, Cyia Moon, Khristian, Keila and Kaleb Landavazo; great-grandchildren, Eleanor Henderson, Amayah Landavazo, Demetrius Cauley, Darius Banks, Paris, Cyia, Yevaeh, Cyzell, Kawhi and Eziah Moon. Also, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and many dear friends who will fondly remember him.
