Minister Burton

June 23, 1937 — June 29, 2019

The journey of Patsy Ruth Burton's life began in Mansfield, Louisiana on June 23, 1937, to her mother, Vashti Harris.

With the middle name "Ruth," derived from the Word of God, Patsy was destined to receive and be a testament to the blessings of God at an early age. Raised in the admonition of the Lord by her grandmother, Quincy Harris, Patsy's faith was the key to unlocking God's promises in her life.

As a child, Patsy loved to sing. Under the tutelage of her aunts, Mandy and Levator, she learned the art of song and became an incredible vocalist which led her to take her gift on the road from Portland to Cleveland, later settling in Denver, Colorado. As she reached adulthood, her songs changed from secular to gospel where she found her true passion was singing for the Lord in church.

Patsy was the proud mother of six vibrant children: Anthony Burton, Vincent Trowell, twins Cheryl (Everidge) and Derryl Trowell, Melanie Redditt (Thomas) and Angela Lennon. She set a positive, loving example for her children giving them their early spiritual development and teaching them many important life lessons including how to establish financial security. Patsy became a trailblazer for her family through her early investments in real estate at a time when it was unheard of for a woman of color to be a property owner.

Patsy's aspirations for herself and her family motivated her to return to school in 1968, completing her GED at Emily Griffith Opportunity School. She furthered her education by earning her Associate of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education and later blessed the lives of hundreds of children for over 33 years as a head start teacher with the Child Opportunity Program. Patsy was a dedicated educator who ensured a successful foundation for her students by promoting positive behaviors and a love for learning. Patsy's impact on the lives of the young people she served will continue to be felt for generations.

A consistent woman of faith, Patsy worshiped at New Hope Baptist Church for over 40 years. In 2004, she accepted the call of ministry and announced it to her Pastor, James Peters. Pastor Peters listened intently as God poured out in Patsy's spirit her trial message to the congregation, "God is The God of Second Chances," prompting her certificate of license to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Minister Patsy Burton prayed at the bedside of her family, friends, and loved ones providing comfort, song and praise even in her last days when her message was just a whisper. Patsy's life and accomplishments are a true testimony of God's power and love.

The sun set on the life of Minister Patsy Burton on June 29, 2019 in Denver, Colorado when she passed into eternal rest. She led her life praising God and even in her last days, she sang her daily praise, "How great is our God." Those left to honor her life include her daughters, Cheryl Everidge and Angela Lennon of Denver, Colorado; 8 grandchildren, Darrell Smith Sr., Dawn Smith Sr., Shatana Allen, Charrise Wideman, Marshalena Schupp, Derek Hoffman, Fanta Zoumana and Brianna Lennon all of Denver, Colorado; 13 great-grandchildren, Dawan Smith Jr., Janae Smith, Titus "Cushuan" Smith, David Wideman Jr., Gabriel Schupp, Martelle Smith, Ausaru Amen, Revan Allen, Darrell Smith Jr., Samia Lennon, Laila Lugo, Jaida Lugo, and Lucy Wideman; and a host of extended relatives and friends.
