LIFE’S JOURNEY
Melvin James Goree
“Danny Boy”
Melvin James Goree, known affectionately as “Danny Boy” since the moment of his birth on July 4, 1951, in Lubbock, Texas, left a lasting imprint on all who knew him. The fifth child of Goldie and Colonel George Goree, Sr., Melvin’s early years were marked by a love for reading and lively games of cards, dominos, and baseball. His joyous spirit was evident from the very start, as a midwife famously declared him a beautiful baby and lovingly christened him with a nickname that would stay with him throughout his life.
Melvin attended Manual High School in 1966 and briefly served his country in the U.S. Navy in 1971, stationed in San Diego, California. His dedication and quiet strength were hallmarks both in service and in civilian life.
In 1973, Melvin married Lee Earl (Diane) May at the Byron White US.S Courthouse in Denver, Colorado. Their deep love brought forth two beloved children, Tony and Tamesha, whom they nurtured with pride and warmth. Melvin often spoke with heartfelt joy about their first meeting and the tenderness of their wedding day, a testament to the enduring bond they shared.
In 1985, Melvin’s journey of companionship continued with Doris Green, whom he met at the El Chapultepec Jazz & Blues Club in Denver. Together they embraced a blended family including Kellie, Demond, and Roxane, who held a special place in Melvin’s heart.
Known for his playful spirit and generosity, Melvin delighted in turning everyday moments into treasured memories for his children- from transforming the kitchen into a jungle gym to relaxing while eating sardines and crackers while lying on the living room floor. He taught kindness through patient guidance and conversation, shaping a legacy of compassion and understanding.
Melvin’s grandchildren- Sadie, Chris, Tonesha, LaTrisha, Greg, Kiara, Tyler, Chappell, Channon, and Channell- remember him lovingly as Grandpa or Pop-O, and recall the special sandwiches he made for their school adventures and the overwhelming joy he felt holding his great-granddaughter, Mari, his “Little Angel,” for the first time.
Professionally, Melvin devoted his career to grocery distribution as a materials handler with Safeway, where his reliability and work ethic stood out. In moments of leisure, he found joy in watching football and basketball, favorite television shows like Law & Order and In the Heat of the Night, and sharing lively banter- especially teasing Denver Broncos fans after tough games, all with a twinkle in his eye.
Beside him stood steadfast friends such as Roger Gentry and Tommy Dukes: friends who remember Melvin’s impeccable style and sharp presence, a man who could give GQ Magazine a run for it’s money.
Melvin peacefully passed away on April 19, 2026, at Swedish Medical Center, leaving behind a family enriched by his wisdom, humor, and unconditional love. He is survived by his son Tony (Tameka), daughter Tamesha (Michael), bonus children Kellie, Demond, and Roxanne, his brother Colonel George Jr. (Barbara), sisters Patsy Ann, Peggie (Kark), Sandra, and Rene (Mark), as well as nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
