Mary Strickland

July 14, 1928 — May 8, 2013

Mary Alice Strickland was born on July 14, 1928, in Dillon, South Carolina to her parents, Melvin Peirson and Mary Brigman Peirson. She was the only child born to this union. Growing up, she worked on the family farm and enjoyed the time spent with her cousins. In 1945, Mary united in holy matrimony to Eugene Stancil. They first met when they both lived in North Carolina. To this union, three sons, Eugene, Jr., James and Ronald were born. In 1956, she wed William Strickland and two daughters, Waunda and Sonja were born. They all remember their mother as loving, kind and always available when needed. She later was blessed with eleven grandchildren, Regina, Vanessa, Phillip, Marcella, Antone, Tanisha, Troy, Erikka, Eric, Marvin and Valerie were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They fondly remember her making rice krispie treats during her visits and giving them ice cream and orange sherbert. They all shared many happy and precious moments together. By profession, Mary was employed in Food Service at Rose Medical Center in Denver and the Veteran's Medical Center in San Diego, California. Wherever she worked, she was hard working dedicated and a person who was dependable and worked well with her co-workers. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Mary attended Heritage Christian Center in Denver, Colorado for a number of years. She truly enjoyed her walk with the Lord and fellowship shared with her church family. Mary was a fun loving woman who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed shopping in the mall, watching her favorite television programs and looking in catalog books. Her closest friend, Mable Hargrave, who preceded Mary in death, shared a camaraderie that expemlified true and genuine friendship. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful lady. To know Mary was to love her. Mary Alice Strickland departed this life on May 8, 2013 in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory include three sons, Eugene (Kathy) Stancil, Jr., Portage, Michigan, Reverend James Stancil, San Diego, CA and Ronald Stancil, Denver; two daughters, Waunda Anderson, San Diego, CA and Sonja Strickland, Denver; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
