Martha Ann
Benford
January 6, 1953 – May 1, 2026
Martha Ann Benfor
On January 6, 1953, in Aurora, Colorado, Martha Ann Benford entered the world as a beloved daughter to Johnnie Quattlebaum and Norma Louise Tucker. Growing up as the second oldest among three sisters and five brothers, Martha's childhood was woven with deep familial bonds. Sisters Sally, Johnniemae, and April, alongside brothers Johnnie, Curtis, Jerdie, Leo, and Lazalle, shared a close-knit upbringing filled with shared adventures and affectionate companionship.
From her earliest days, Martha’s spirit shone brightly. She and her older sister Sally were inseparable, always side by side. Childhood memories brim with images of the sisters riding their bikes through the neighborhood and racing footraces with friends, their laughter echoing in the warm Colorado air. A proud product of Denver Public Schools, Martha's school years stretched from Mitchell Elementary—where she formed an unbreakable friendship with Barbara White—to Cole Junior High, and onward to Manual High School. As a Manual Thunderbolt track athlete, she displayed determination and spirit, culminating in her graduation with the Class of 1970.
Life brought Martha much joy as she met her high school sweetheart at Manual High. Together, they celebrated their marriage on July 11, 1970, and welcomed their son, I.V. Benford Jr., on April 6, 1971. Their 35 years of marriage were filled with treasured memories, a testament to their lasting love and partnership. Throughout her career, Martha contributed her talents to Varsity Contractors and served with dedication as a supervisor at Whayne Enterprises until her well-earned retirement.
Martha’s warmth extended beyond her family and career through her passion for cooking and nurturing. Known for preparing hearty, generous meals that could feed an army, she delighted in making spaghetti, lasagna, and fried catfish, always accompanied by her celebrated homemade banana pudding and lemon pies. Her green thumb brought life and color to the plants and flowers she lovingly tended. Friends recall not only her culinary gifts but also her stylish sense, her radiant smiles, and the countless cookouts where her laughter and hospitality made all feel welcome.
A devoted mother, sister, and friend, Martha was cherished for her joyful spirit and her ability to listen with genuine care. Though she is deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Martha was preceded in passing by her parents, Johnnie and Norma Quattlebaum; her brother Leo Stafford; and her brother-in-law Anthony Thomas.
She leaves behind her treasured son, I.V. (Denise) Benford Jr.; brothers Johnnie, Curtis (Vicky), Jerdie (Jerri), and Lazalle (Michelle) Quattlebaum; and sisters Sally Thomas, Johnniemae Martin, and April Franklin. Her loving nieces and nephews—Nina Thomas, Joseph Martin, Tammy Martin, Curt Quattlebaum, Jeremy Quattlebaum, Candace Stafford-Hayward, Lamar Stafford, Jerdee Quattlebaum, J.C. Quattlebaum, Jasmine Franklin, Reagan Quattlebaum, Malcolm Quattlebaum, and Patrick Thomas-Campbell—carry her memory forward with affection.
Martha Ann Benford’s life was one of love, laughter, and lasting bonds—an enduring blessing to all who had the privilege to know her. She will forever remain in our hearts, deeply missed and eternally loved.
