OBITUARY

Karen Marie Modica

Karen Marie Modica was born on August 11, 1941, in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, Karen Marie Modica brought a unique spark to the lives she touched. The daughter of Ella Cecelia Burke and Michael Patrick Kiley, she grew up with a love for learning, which she cultivated at Theodore Roosevelt High School. Alongside her beloved sister Kathleen Patricia Bush, Karen embraced the warmth of family and friendship that would define her life

Karen ventured into marriage twice, first to Vincent Modica, with whom she shared two cherished sons, Vincent (Tony) Modica and Michael D. Modica. Later in life, she found companionship with Jake Maffioli, navigating both joy and challenge with resilience and a spirited sense of humor.

A devoted grandmother, affectionately known as "Nana," Karen's heart swelled with love for her grandchildren: Zoe, Nadia, Kiley, Keylie  and the ever-energetic Dominic. Her legacy blossomed further with the arrival of her great-granddaughters, Josephine and Elsie Mae, who will forever carry her light.

With a career as an Admissions Clerk at Redding Medical Center, Karen's sharp wit and humor made her a beacon of positivity among her colleagues. They fondly remember her comedic talent, often remarking how her clever comebacks could rival a stand-up comedian’s routine. Life's challenges never dulled her spirit; instead, they fueled her love for reading, as she found solace in devouring paperback novels one after another. Karen's life was beautifully woven with friendships that enriched her journey, especially with companions like Kathleen and Phyliss, who shared in her laughter and her trials. She had a knack for uplifting those around her, always extending warmth and understanding.

On September 28, 2025, Karen passed away peacefully at Swedish Medical Center, surrounded by the love of her family, with Tony and Zoe by her side. As we reflect on her life, we acknowledge the struggles she faced but also the indomitable spirit she displayed through it all. Though she often sought something just beyond her reach, we take comfort in knowing that her quest for peace is fulfilled in her eternal rest.Survived by her sons, Tony and Mike, grandchildren Zoe, Nadia, Kiley, Keylie, and Dominic, as well as her beloved great-granddaughters, Josephine and Elsie Mae, Karen leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her.

Rest in peace, dear Karen. You will be missed, but your light will continue to shine through the lives you touched.
