Joe Eddie Barbee

March 6, 1948 — July 17, 2025

Joe Eddie Barbee was born on March 6, 1948, in Tillatoba, Mississippi, to Mel and Hattie Lee Barbee (née Hardy). He was the second child in the Barbee family and the beloved younger brother of Beatrice (Brown). In his early years, Joe lived with his family on a large farm in Mississippi. Later, the family relocated to Denver, Colorado, settling in the Park Hill neighborhood. Joe attended Manual High School, where he demonstrated both academic excellence and artistic talent—skipping the 11th grade to graduate a year early alongside his sister, and contributing to the design of the Manual Thunderbolts yearbook.

Following graduation, Joe was drafted into the Vietnam War. Determined to chart his own course, he chose instead to enlist in the United States Navy. He served honorably at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and was later discharged with distinction.

Returning to Denver during the height of the civil rights movement, Joe seized new opportunities in a changing world. He attended Emily Griffith Technical College, becoming a licensed and skilled carpenter. His craftsmanship helped shape the Montbello neighborhood, where many of the homes he worked on still stand as a testament to his talent and dedication.

Joe was also a devoted father. He and Gwendolyn Watson welcomed their son, Corey Joe Barbee, and raised him, along with his older brother Kevin Watson, in the Denver and Aurora suburbs. Tragically,Joe was preceded in death by Corey Joe, who passed away as a result of senseless violence.

Joe is also preceded in passing by his parents, Mel and Hattie Barbee; his sister Beatrice Brown and brother-in-law Clyde Brown; and many cherished family and friends. He is survived by his nephews Clyde Brown Jr. (Rita), Melvin Brown (Tracy), and Rayford Brown; great-nieces Lauren and Jaden; great-nephew Chase; and a host of extended family members and friends who will remember Joe fondly for his warm spirit.

Joe Eddie Barbee’s life was one of kindness, service, and quiet impact. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
