Donterrius "Jade" Potter

January 6, 1992 — January 11, 2023

Denver, CO

Donterrius O’Warren Potter was born January 6,1992 in Monroe, Louisiana at 6 pm.  From birth, Donterrius was bright eyed and attentive to his surroundings.  The elders would always tell us “that boy’s been here before” because he was so smart and had the ability to hold meaningful conversations at a very early age.

As a young child, Donterrius loved to learn.  Learning new things was like a good ole soul food dish to him and he often cleaned his plate.  In addition to his love of learning new things, he enjoyed fishing with his grandmother, drawing, wrestling, gaming and all things Anime.

Donterrius was an author of short stories and an avid reader.  He enjoyed reading Lemony Snickets, Series of Unfortunate events but his absolute favorite book series was Harry Potter.  He once waited in line at midnight just to get a copy of “The Deathly Hallows” then commenced to stay up for the next two days reading the ENTIRE book.

Donterrius graduated from Overland High School in 2009.  While at Overland, he was one of the founding members of the Gay Straight Alliance and President of GSA his senior year.   After graduating high school, he was excited to attend the University of Northern Colorado.  He felt like it was far enough, yet close enough to his family when needed.  It was at UNC that Donterrius was baptized by The Church of Latter Day Saints on March 3, 2012.

If you knew him, you knew he had big dimples and an infectious smile.  He shared both his smile and much of his heart freely, even at his lowest of times. He was most always a “glass half full kind of person” and had and was extremely caring and loving.  He never met a stranger and would give you the coat off his back to ensure someone else’s warmth over his own.

Donterrius spent the last three and a half years as a transient in the Denver Metro community.  He would often tell us he was doing God’s work and helping what would otherwise be an unseen community of people.  He told us God was his provider and while it would get hard, he knew he’d be ok.  While difficult for us to accept, we had no choice because another truth about D was when he made his mind up, there was no changing it.

Donterrius departed this life on Wednesday, January 11th, 2023. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers Denise Jackson and Mary Phenix and uncle Carl Phenix.

Donterrius leaves to cherish his memory: his father, George Phenix, his mother, Cartina Luckey (Morrise Luckey- stepfather), his grandfather, Dexter Jackson, his siblings, Brianna Phenix (sister), Coleman Phenix (brother), Olivia Phenix (sister), Aiyana Davis (stepsister), Jenane Samana (stepsister), Jamilia Luckey (stepsister), nieces Ava Robinson and Lylah Jo Snow and nephew Mika Samana. As well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
