Deaconess Jordon

April 3, 1913 — January 22, 2013

Jo Metra Jordan was blessed with a century-long life span. Seventy days before her 100th birthday she transitioned from this world into eternal peace. A career beautician and faithful church worker, she had the opportunity to live in the Northwest and Colorado as well as her naive Texas.. She was born April 3, 1913 in Ft. Worth, Texas, the daughter of Mr. & Ms. Joe Allen. Her mother died when she was a child and she had close relationships with both her mother's and father's families. Both families were members of the Shiloh Baptist church, one of the major churches in Ft. Worth's African-American community. Jo was active at Shiloh throughout he childhood and youth. After gfraduating from the I.M. Terrell High School, she trained as a cosmetologist. While working at a local beauty salon, she met Cecile Lee Jordan, a former resident of Ft. Worth and a boxer then living Washington state. They married and moved to the Northwest, living at times in Tacoma and Spokane, Washington as well as Billings, Montana. In all these locations Jo joined a local Baptist church and sang in the choir. In the mid-1950s they relocated to Denver. Jo immediately joined New Hope Baptist Church and was a member for 58 years. A choir member for many years, she also was a member of the Missionary Society, the Boosters Club and participated in numrous activities. Former pastor Reverend James Peters appointed her a Deaconess. Jo had a fascination with ceramic salt-and-pepper shakers Whereas many people think of them as merely as utilitarian objects, she considered them miniature works of art and collected them throughout her life and placed them on several shelves in a display case in her home. She also had collections of colorful tams and. of course, hats for Sunday attire and special occasions. She was indeed and "Lady with a Hatitude". During her many years in Denver she worked at several beauty salons and was a member of the local Beauticians association as well as a Federated Women's Club. Deaconess Jordan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her brother Earl and her nephew, William. She is survived by her niece, Jo Metra Allen Eure of Los Angeles; a cousin, Annete Walker of Denver; a sister-in-law, Cora Jordan of Los Angeles; a step-grandson, Trevor Brockman of Fort Worth; and other relatives and friends.
