Shirley Walker

September 25, 1936 — February 19, 2015

Shirley Sue Walker was born to John L. Watson, Sr. and Lucille Leopard-Watson on September 25, 1936 in Tyler, Texas. She was the fifth child born in a family of six: the last surviving child born to this union. She was raised surrounded by her grandfather; mother; and siblings Therman Watson, Hazel Watson-Crawford, John L. Watson Jr., Nina Mae Watson-Stokes, and Shirley Rae Watson. In the late 1940's, Shirley moved to Colorado where she received her formal education from Cole Junior High School and Manual High School. While attending Manual High School, Shirley met and married her high school sweetheart James L. Walker Sr. on May 24, 1954. Together they had four children, Cynthia A. Walker-Smith (Willard), Sheila R. Walker-Bullock (John), James L. Walker Jr., and the late Vida F. Walker. They remember her as a mother who was very humble, down to earth, and loved everyone unconditionally. They shared many happy and precious moments together. Shirley cared for her young children and later began working at Denver General Hospital as a Supply Technician. She dedicated her time there for over 20 years. Then in 1993, Shirley decided to retire and dedicate herself to another passion in serving and helping others. She worked many days and hours caring for elderly friends with love and joy. Shirley was blessed to meet and care for a special friend the late Mrs. Rockwell; in which, she considered a best friend. Shirley was hardworking and performed her duties with a spirit of excellence. She was a role model to all those she encountered, along with her contagious laugh, which everyone enjoyed while being with her. Shirley was truly a phenomenal woman! A woman of faith and strong in our Lord Jesus Christ, Shirley accepted The Lord as her personal savior at a very early age. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and attended Central Baptist Church with her husband where she joined the choir. Shirley loved to play games of chance in addition to watching various game shows like Wheel of Fortune and the Price is Right with her dear friend for over 60 years, Ms. Mary Catherine Nickerson. She also enjoyed watching her daily soap opera shows and her favorite Denver Broncos. When she wasn't watching television, Shirley loved spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved taking them to watch the latest movies; and she also enjoyed supporting them in their various sporting endeavors such as football and ice skating. Her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life, each one of them beautiful in their own way, and each one more precious than gold. Shirley Sue Walker departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on February 19, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. Those present to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her children, six grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, a host of other relatives, and many friends.
